Seven years ago, we opened up a generous free plan so that small groups could get started with zero friction. It has been wildly successful—today it powers a thriving ecosystem of community and nonprofit groups that rely on Gaggle Mail every single day.
We’re proud of that success and fully committed to sustaining it, so we’re introducing a simple way for high-activity free users to cover some of the costs. Starting July 2025, we’re introducing an optional upgrade called Gaggle Mail Pro.
What’s changing for free groups
- Sending straight from your inbox — Until now, any member of a free group could email groupname@gaggle.email, and the message would go out instantly. From July 2025, we’re rolling out a change: direct-from-inbox sending for free groups is reserved for members who add the new Gaggle Mail Pro subscription ($2 per month, with the first three months 50% off).
- Drafts, not dead ends — If you try to send to a free group without Pro we save your message in Drafts and email you a link. You can log in, hit Send, and your message reaches the group just as before—no charge, nothing lost.
- Full message history for every free group — We’re scrapping the old three-month archive limit. Whether or not anyone goes Pro, every free group now keeps its entire email history.
Paid plans (Standard and Premium) already include all of the above, so nothing changes for them.
Why we’re doing this
A small number of very active groups and senders generate most of the costs for free groups. By asking those power users to chip in a little, we can:
- Keep the core service free for thousands of smaller groups.
- Invest in new features, such as AI-generated thread summaries and enhanced search capabilities.
- Maintain top-tier deliverability as our community continues to grow.
If you’re a casual reader or you’re happy to post from the web composer, everything still works exactly as it always has, only now with unlimited history.
